I got a good amount of feedback of readers wanting more Little Queen. She only graces the first two stories for a few paragraphs, but the idea of her seemed to really pique people’s interest. So as they say:

Ask and ye shall receive!

Little Queen is co-starring in the next Jake Hawking adventure entitled Little Queen’s Gambit.

Here’s what you can expect from the next story:

Enjoying the amusements that Tortuga has to offer, Captain Jake Hawking meets a mysterious woman in need of help. But when things go horribly wrong, it’s up to the Barbadian ex-slave, Little Queen, to lead her fellow crewmates of the Broad-Wing and save the captain before it’s too late.

It’s funny, I originally wrote Little Queen to be male. I figured a large, strong slave named Little Queen would really be emasculating, plus it brings up images of Little John. But I used the pronoun “he” only once — and because of the name — my friend Melissa and my girlfriend, Kate, pictured he as a she. And it got me thinking, and the more I thought about it the more I loved the idea of Jake Hawking’s righthand man being a strong, badass, former slave, and a woman. She’s the Riker to Hawking’s Picard (ok, she’s more like Worf) and everyone else on the ship acknowledges this because it means they don’t get pummeled.

There are so few female pirates in stories, and fewer minorities, which is bizarre since if you think pirate ships were all white folk you’re nuts.  So, I’m really hoping Little Queen can fill that gaping hole.

She’s also an absolute joy to write. Where Jake Hawking is very cerebral, Little Queen is very action-oriented. She’s more likely to crack skulls than act diplomatically. It’s a fun juxtaposition. She’s Wonder Woman, Hulk, and Zoe (from Firefly) all wrapped into piratey goodness.

Like the first two covers, this third one was created by Peter Simeti of Painted Heroes and Alterna Comics.

Little Queen’s Gambit is a short-story standing at about 10,000 words and will be out on Thursday, September 12 (next week!) via Amazon for your Kindle devices and apps for $0.99.

This is the final Jake Hawking Adventure for now. I have more in store for him and his crew, so if you’re enjoying the shorts, have no fair.
