‘Tulip Fever’ trailer a thrilling historical romance

I’m always on the look out for new period films, especially flicks set in the 17th Century. Here’s a new one, Tulip Fever, that’s coming out this summer. It’s based off the novel by Deborah Moggach.

Set in 17th century Amsterdam, TULIP FEVER follows a married woman (Alicia Vikander) who begins a passionate affair with an artist (Dane DeHaan) hired to paint her portrait. The lovers gamble on the booming market for tulip bulbs as a way to raise money to run away together.

Tulip Fever movie still

From the look of the trailer, they do an amazing job with the costuming. The movie also takes place during an interesting period of Amsterdam’s history, called Tulip Mania. In 1637, tulip contract prices skyrocketed. Some single tulip bulbs sold for more than 10x the annual income of a skilled craftsman.

Those are some expensive freakin’ flowers.

Anyways, like all speculative markets where prices get out of hand (looking at you student loans), the market crashed suddenly.

Looking forward to this one. Hopefully it’ll get some widespread release.
